Concrete research and testing
Materials research and testing
Aggregate(s), crushed rock, manufactured sand
Alkali aggregate reactivity (AAR, ASR)
Tunnel construction
Soil mechanics
Soil reports

Project Examples
The following are a few examples of investigations carried out by the experts at HRV Engineering during preparatory studies for construction projects:

  • Geological assessments
  • Geological mapping
  • Investigations of the thickness and types of ground strata
  • Investigations of the fracture pattern and fracture mapping
  • Survey of the water table
  • Search for fill materials
  • Evaluation of bedrock quality
  • Drilling and sampling
  • Supervision and inspection of drilling
  • Supervision of sampling
  • Analysis and description of drill cores

Considerations
Many factors must be taken into account in determining the location and foundations of structures. The scope of research undertaken for this purpose depends upon the conditions in each location and the type of structure concerned. Often it is sufficient to carry out a surface investigation, while in other instances more extensive studies are required relating to the geology of the area and of the geotechnical and petrotechnical properties of the ground materials.

Preparations for construction projects may include a search for building materials for construction, compiling research and testing plans as well as drilling and sampling.  This is often followed by studies and selection of fill materials, assessment of support capabilities including possible subsidence of soil strata, consideration of the effect on groundwater levels and the foundations of structures - to mention only a few of the tasks.

Additionally, further information is available from various tests conducted at the HRV Engineering research laboratory on rock and loose ground layers.
