HRV Engineering has played a major role in the development of Iceland's infrastructure, public utilities and waterworks, including road and highway networks, geothermal heating networks, potable water, sewage systems, bridges, tunnels, airports and harbors.  We have enjoyed, over the years, excellent long term relationships with numerous public entities such as the City of Reykjavík, the Public Roads Administration, the National Power Company (Landsvirkjun) and other local authorities around the country.

Road and Street Design
HRV Engineering has been closely involved in the comprehensive design of roads, streets and highways including traffic structures and utilities at locations all around Iceland.  Highway design, street reconstruction design and re-planning have formed a major part of the services offered to the City of Reykjavík, as well as to other communities.  Recent projects include the preparation of tender documents, design and construction plans and cost estimates for the redevelopment of the Skólavörðuholt area in Reykjavík.  Also, HRV's engineers produced a municipal planning proposal for the Public Roads Administration for the Reykjanesbraut Highway through the town of Hafnarfjörður, including its upgrading to a dual highway.  The design of the Álftanes and Borgarfjarðarbraut Highways was also conducted for the Public Roads Administration.   Recently, HRV Engineering has also participated in the preparation and design of several of Iceland's major road tunnel projects, including Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng, Héðinsfjarðargöng and Almannaskarðsgöng.

Transportation Planning
Services include site planning, transportation systems planning, traffic sign design, including the standardization of traffic markings, traffic estimates and noise pollution control proposals. Other major projects include traffic predictions, the planning of traffic signs in the Reykjavík area for the Public Roads Administration and the design of traffic structures for the Smáralind shopping complex in Kópavogur.

Bridge Design
HRV Engineering employs several experts in the field of bridge building and offers a full range of related services, including bridge design, site planning, flood and discharge forecasts and project supervision.  Examples include the design of the Elliðaár River bridge, numerous pedestrian bridges and underpasses in Reykjavík, a bridge across the Tungnaá River, a tailrace bridge at the Vatnsfell Power Plant and the design of a new bridge crossing the Thjórsá River gate structure upstream from the Búrfell Power Plant.

Airport Design
Preliminary investigations regarding the site for a new airport include studies of obstacle contours in order to determine whether any landscapes or structures interfere with air transport in the site vicinity.  HRV's civil engineers have produced an obstacle map for the Reykjavík domestic airport and designed approach lights at the Keflavík International Airport.  Elsewhere, the company handled the preliminary design of practice runways in the Afstapahraun and Hvassahraun lava fields on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Harbors
Calling on the expertise of a wide range of specialists, harbor construction includes the production of a site plan, wave models, environmental impact assessment, geological research, earthquake studies, structural design of quays and breakwaters and inspection and supervision during construction.  HRV Engineering participated closely in the construction design of a new wharf at the Alcan Smelter Plant at Straumsvík and the terminals to serve the Westman Islands car-ferry.  In addition, the company conducted an environmental impact assessment and the preliminary design of the proposed harbor structures for the Fjardaál Aluminum Smelter at Reyðarfjörður.
